My New Best Friend

There are disadvantages to loosing weight. Sometimes your favorite summer sandals get kind of loose and sloppy. Sometimes you keep on wearing them, partly because you paid so much for them, and well, they are just so comfortable and cute! The problem with this is that uneven ground combined with loose sandals can cause slipping - that's what happened on our last day at the beach in North Bay. Four weeks ago or so.
I thought right away that I heard something pop, but I didn't want to complain too much. I complain enough as it is! Today I finally saw the podiatrist, and guess what? It's a fracture. Now I have a new best friend, a cam walker. For six weeks.
I'm trying to be cheerful, but it's discouraging. I'm thankful I didn't try to walk the Bridge at Mackinac. I'm glad to know all my pain wasn't just me being a whiner. I'm glad to be able to afford treatment. I'm still having trouble being thankful in all circumstances, but I'm working on it!
If you didn't know that I was a stubborn and difficult woman before this, you do now! I was foolish not to get it looked at sooner, but I was just sure I had twisted it and it would heal sooner or later. It's my optimistic personality - given enough time everything gets better, right? Apparently not foot fractures that you are still walking on!
Sooooooooooo.. just how does a mama 'stay off' her feet for 4-6 weeks? I'm not sure!
Here I thought my patience was perfected! I guess the Lord is still working on me in that department!

  1. Well, I guess the only good thing about it is we are past the worst of the heat of summer (hopefully).

Do prop your feet up (or try to) and rest. I know, rest and motherhood do not always go together.

Will keep you in my prayers.

  3. Oh I'm so sorry about your foot! That will be hard -- I'll be thinking of you. I once dragged my poor sister all around Greece and Turkey -- spending many days walking, only to discover when we got home that the pain she was experiencing in her foot was due to a fracture! Poor thing!!

  5. The same thing happened to my mom. She refused to part with her sandals too and she twisted her foot and low and behold a fracture happened. She wasn't aware of the fracture and walked for a week that way. Well, then the fracture became a complete break :(

To bring you a little peace of mind...yes you will heal! Hooray :) What helped my mom heal was not stepping on that foot at all. She used crutches which were tiresome, but her bones fused together wonderfully. Luckily you don't have a complete break. Be sure to elevate your foot off and on during the day as to keep swelling down which helps in the healing process. Less use of your foot the better and the quicker it will heal. Hope time flies so that you can be up and around again!

  6. Heather ~ I am so sorry about your fracture. I can identify! I fell awhile back and hurt my ankle; it still aches at times, but I don't think there's a fracture.

I hope your new best friend will help you heal quickly.

  7. I am sorry to hear about your foot. I broke my finger once playing volleyball. I went around in pain for two weeks before I saw the doctor. I keep telling myself it was only jammed!!

Look at the bright side, you won't be wearing that boot in the heat of the summer. Hope it heals quickly!!

  8. Thank you for all of your encouragement! I feel so foolish for not getting it looked at sooner - I really should have! I am thankful that it is cooler here in the midwest, but with the temporary cast underneith the cam walker, it is still hot. Yesterday I had sweat dripping through my toes and today the whole affair smells like old tennis shoes! Yuck!
This too will pass! I hope!
